Description
Energy harvesting from garments is an innovative technology that can power critical soldier systems without limiting mobility or adding a logistical burden. Soldiers currently carry a large amount of batteries in both weight and type for various applications, including communication, computing, and sensors. Creare and the Microsystems Technology Laboratories at MIT propose to develop piezoelectric nanofiber energy harvesting systems for integration directly on military garments. Creating power locally on the garment will reduce battery power requirements and simplify wiring for wearable devices. During Phase I, we will develop and test energy harvesting prototypes based on piezoelectric nanofibers to demonstrate power generation and a feasible fabrication approach. During Phase II, we will optimize the device designs, scale up integration to include larger garment areas, and produce and test prototype garment-based energy harvesters.
