Description
Accessing a freight locomotive is one of the most basic, daily tasks performed by a railroad engineer. However, this task has historically been difficult due to several factors such as the first step which may be 19 inches above the top of the rail, weather conditions which may make the steps slippery, and the fact that the ground surrounding the locomotive may be uneven or covered in debris or ballast. Considering these difficulties and the aging workforce that must navigate these hazards, there are ample opportunities for injuries while accessing a locomotive. GS Engineering was awarded a Phase I SBIR to develop a device which could eliminate his hazard by lifting a worker from the ballast level to the deck of the locomotive. GS Engineering succeded in making such a device, and feedback from industry has been enthusiastic and positive with stakeholders immediately recognizing the value of such a device in making their workplace safer. GS Engineering is prepared to proceed to Phase II, where detailed design and integration can take place, followed by testing of the system aboard a locomotive in a revenue environment. This technology can then be transitioned to the industry.
