Description
ABSTRACT: This proposal is directed to filling the Air Forces need to have high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets to replace the low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnets currently in use at the Holloman High Speed Test Track (HHSTT) used for levitating the rocket sled. This upgrade will increase performance, reduce operational cost of the supersonic magnetically levitated rocket sled and eliminate liquid helium (LHe) cooling. Our objective is to design and construct a HTS magnet that replaces the NbTi magnet. We will be addressing the magnet design, magnet performance and quench protection.; BENEFIT: The results of this work can lead to several commercial and science based applications of HTS conductors. These include superconducting magnets 1 to >10 T in the temperature range of 4-77K that are used in the following areas:1. Rotor and stator coils for motors and generators2. Coils for Inductive Fault Current Limiters3. Future Fusion superconducting magnets4. High energy physics and nuclear physics field shaping coils for accelerators5. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES)In each application, integration of HTS YBCO into the rocket sled as a conduction cooled superconductor requires solving problems applicable to any system.
