Description
Transitioning from the legacy electrical grid where proprietary communications platforms and applications predominate, to the future vision for the electrical grid where the underlying framework architecture can maintain flexibility at multiple levels is critical to grid modernization. The public and the Department of Energy has a vested interest in technologies that can take advantage of the promise of the “Internet of Things” while still interface with older technologies effectively. Project Approach Modern energy distribution systems are layered systems of systems and the solution proposed is composed of collaborating nodes organized as a fractal hierarchy. The principals are drawn from complexity theory where complex systems are self-organized. The approach provides superior backward compatibility by wrapping (virtualizing) legacy components and security by limiting ommunications to trusted entities. Commercial Application and Other Benefits: Beyond the grid application described above the fractal graph framework provides a high-level method for the Internet of Things in other fields. The research develops an architectural approach that is similar to how eco-systems work and could be applied to biological research analytics, Internet security and other advanced control systems.
