Description
Swabs are routinely used by crime scene investigators and forensic scientists for the collection of a wide range of biological evidence for analysis. Sterile cotton swabs are popular with forensic investigators due to their proficiency in adsorbing cellular material, however they are known for their low efficiency of sample (DNA) release. To better meet the needs of forensic investigators, Luna Innovations is developing a swab with both robust DNA binding and enhanced DNA release. Lunas swab technology uses unique electrospun nanofibers that provide excellent adsorptive properties, and the swab material can undergo complete controllable dissolution for maximum specimen recovery. During the Phase II program, Luna will work with Qiagen to match the forensic swab chemistry with forensic DNA extraction workflows, and will work with commercial scale electrospinning and swab manufacturing partners to develop prototypes. Luna will again work with our partners at the National Forensic Science Technology Center for swab validation to demonstrate superior cellular uptake, and a controllable release of greater than 75% DNA.
