Description

State of art Li ion batteries are not able to meet the energy density and charge-discharge cycling stability requirements for the satellite applications for DoD. The primary problems with the most promising high capacity cathode materials are associated with poor electrode/electrolyte interaction that results in low capacities and poor rate capability. In addition, structural instability during charge-discharge cycling reduces the lifetime of these materials. In the Phase I project, Lynntech developed advanced cathode materials for addressing these problems and demonstrated feasibility to achieve the 300 Wh/kg energy density target for Air Force application. The Phase II project will further the Phase I research to optimize performance and stability of both cathode and anode materials and demonstrate the operation of a prototype Li ion battery with these material innovations to meet the Air Force requirements.
