Description
ABSTRACT: Many soldier-worn military assets depend on power provided by rechargeable batteries. Improvements to system capabilities come with requisite increases in power and energy consumption. As such, improvements to rechargeable power systems are needed to meet these growing demands. For optimal mission capability, requirements for additional power systems come against weight and mounting space limitations, which can affect the movement capabilities of the dismounted soldier. Therefore, to support battlefield airmen, the Air Force is seeking the development of a multifunctional battery to be integrated with SAPI plates within tactical vests, which could address the space limitations for power systems. However, safety is of utmost concern in the implementation of these battery systems, in particular in the event of ballistic impact. In line with these safety and performance goals, Lynntech seeks to develop and test novel electrolyte systems designed to provide increased mechanical and fail-safe support while still meeting the necessary performance requirements of such a battery system. In the Phase I, Lynntech will perform studies to evaluate these materials for energy, capacity, power, mechanical stability, and safety through experimental testing and modeling. The materials and configuration that best meet the needs of the Air Force will be recommended for further development.; BENEFIT: Current materials and lithium ion cell designs are inadequate for many military and civilian needs because of limited form factors and safety. Delivering safe, portable energy in modular form factors as proposed expands the current market and opens up new ones. High-energy, high-safety batteries are useful in many military settings including soldier power, vehicle power, remote sensors, and others.Private sector applications include those that require highly safe batteries such as automotive batteries, medical devices, and consumer electronics. Delivering high-energy, high-safety batteries as proposed would allow for increased depth in a variety of markets through improvements to battery capabilities.
