Description
A recent study of battlefield casualties found that over 90% of potentially survivable mortality cases were associated with hemorrhage. It is critical to maintain fluids and prevent hemorrhagic shock as soon as possible after the injury. However, medics must plan for and carry these bulky solutions to the point of injury, and additional casualties could exhaust limited available supplies. Mainstream Engineering proposes a small, hand-held portable, lightweight system to produce sterile water for injection from easily available potable water. The device will produce sterile water for injection on demand, and together with freeze dried plasma, platelets, and dry formularies, will greatly improve the ability of the medic to respond to critical survivable injuries. The device will be smaller than 0.15 cubic feet and weight less than 4 pounds, the weight of less than 2 liter-bags of water, but will be capable of generating 10 liters of sterile water for injection.
