Description
Acoustic imaging, by micro seismic monitoring, helps oil & gas operators maximize asset value through real-time completions optimization to improve production by monitoring hydraulic fracturing. Mapping where the fractures are going and analyze the effectiveness of treatment allows operators to understand how well they are frac’ing and how to increase overall production. Currently imaging is limited to induced seismic activities during pumping and fracturing. The creation of acoustic generating material would then allow post formation imaging of fractured networks and continuous monitoring of them. The focus of this proposal is the research and development of an acoustic emitting additive proppant technology. The overall objective of this proposal is to establish a proof of theory that the acoustic imaging agents can perform appropriately under well conditions. Specifically, that they survive fracture placement and uniformly emit acoustic signal. The following are the primary goals and objectives. Identify composite materials able to withstand pumping and consolidation pressures, determine delay or triggerable signaling, and identify potential microseismic fracture monitoring partners. The project will demonstrate the production of an acoustic imaging agent material that is suitable for use in a variety of seismic monitoring applications, specifically hydraulic fracture. Increased resolution lowers cost and environmental risk. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: An acoustic imaging agent will increase resolutions for any field conducting geological imaging/mapping. Prominent fields include oil & gas hydraulic fracturing, geothermal, and CO2 sequestration.
