Description
American warfighters require adequate real-time information about radiation exposure to make appropriate triage and engagement decisions in the aftermath of a nuclear blast. Present dosimeter technology including PIN diodes for prompt neutrons and RadFETs for prompt gamma radiation can provide this information more accurately if appropriately upgraded and utilized. In this work, RMDs dosimetry and materials experts will team with experts at Canberra and utilize the UDR-13 platform to make an upgradable system with an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity over the existing system. Utilization of the existing sensors will allow us to test a high TRL device in Phase I and calibrate out temperature and process dependent fluctuations in the sensitivity. An upgradeable system offers the potential to drastically reduce the costs to the government of implementing this advance in capabilities, while establishing a clear path to manufacturability and deployment of both the upgrade and a completely new unit for both military and first responder use.
