Description
From 1993 to 2013, sixteen incidents involving highly enriched uranium associated with illegal activity has been reported to the IAEA.An implosion type of weapon would require roughly 25 kg of highly enriched uranium (HEU).One component in the layered defense against nuclear weapons is standoff detection of special nuclear materials, as HEU is material that can be easily deployed in a nuclear weapon.Though detection of HEU is difficult, RMD has developed a number of large-volume scintillation materials (e.g. Cs2LiYCl6 or Cs2LiLa(Br,Cl)6) that can provide energy resolution less than 5% at 662 keV while simultaneously detecting neutrons with an efficiency equivalent to a He-3 tube.The use of a large volume is critical for the detection of low intensity signals over a small time frame.This program will provide a compact, high-efficiency standoff detector for inconspicuous searches of special nuclear materials.
