Description
Redondo Optics Inc. (ROI) proposes to develop, demonstrate, and deliver to the Navy a unique compact, light-weight, and ultra-low power, wireless multi-parameter fiber optic environmental sensor (FOESens) system for the in-situ early warning fault detection of Lithium cells and batteries. The miniature FOESens sensor system uses a minimally invasive multi-parameter fiber optic sensor probe to monitor in real time the environmental state of the battery module and detects the potential release of flammable toxic gases, smoke, and particulates to provide Navy operators with an immediate audio/visual alarm In Phase I of this program, ROI will design and assemble a working laboratory bench prototype of the multi-parameter FOESens system, and extensively tested to demonstrate its capability to detect early precursors of lithium batteries damage. In the Phase I Option ROI will complete the optimization of the signal processing electronics system to enable the reliable and accurate early warning fault detection of the battery environment. In Phase II, ROI in collaboration with a strategic partner will engineer and produce a field deployable FOESens system that can be tested aboard a UUV battery module platform.
