Description
ABSTRACT: For this Phase I project, we propose to develop an intraosseous infusion (IO) training simulator that consists of an off-the-shelf uninstrumented partial manikin, a low-cost haptic display, and an augmented reality (AR) display. Phase I will focus on establishing learning objectives and evaluation criteria; establishing criteria for adapting a 3D game for use with inexpensive haptic device; developing mathematical models of the anatomy and penetration; designing a prototype low-cost haptic device; and planning the integration of models, haptic device, and manikin. These objectives are structured to provide a firm foundation for evaluating, refining, and manufacturing the prototype, creating training scenarios, and preparing for commercialization. The first version of the IO trainer will be a comprehensive AR/VR sternal insertion unit with haptic capabilities using the FAST1 device, comprehensive metrics and no disposables.; BENEFIT: Lack of a cost-effective and widely deployable IO training device has resulted in limiting use of this lifesaving technology to trained combat medics and paramedics. This research aims to expand the reach of this procedure by creating an AR/VR IO trainer with no consumable parts that may be used to replace the current live tissue training (LTT) model. This will greatly reduce the total lifecycle cost of training for this device, make it possible to train in and beyond the schoolhouse, and make the IO procedure more widely available.
