Description
ABSTRACT: Hypersonic vehicles require insulation systems that mitigate thermal radiation and provide structural support while exposed to severe thermal, material and mechanical stresses.To sustain hypersonic flight and to allow for atmospheric entry, an insulator capable of surviving temperatures up to 2000K (1727C) is required, whose properties (surface finish, bulk porosity, etc.) can be manipulated to efficiently control the emission, absorption, and scattering of thermal radiation.Sporian proposes to utilize its prior experience in harsh environment materials and thermal protection systems, as well as theoretical modeling to develop ultra-high temperature thermal radiation inhibitor structures using polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs).Industry leaders, OEMs, government agencies, and scale-up companies will all be solicited to guide the Phase I development toward maximum market relevance and to prove the feasibility of Sporians PDC material integration into hypersonic platforms.; BENEFIT: Sporian anticipates development of porous PDC-based heterogeneous insulation materials with enhanced radiative properties for thermal transport mitigation in hypersonics.This material will be attractive for high-temperature harsh environment applications in military, homeland security, and commercial propulsion and turbine engine systems.The high-temperature insulation materials could mitigate heat transfer to thermally-sensitive support structures and internal electronics, providing thermal protection for critical system components.
