Description
TDA, working with our collaborators, proposes to develop a novel RF heating process for rewarming cryogenically preserved tissues and organs. We have demonstrated high heating rates with the nanoparticles during the Phase I project. In the Phase II project, we will improve our already high heating rate by optimizing the RF heating process, along with the type, size and morphology of the nanoparticles so that they heat tissue samples rapidly and uniformly. At the end of the Phase II project, we will test our apparatus and nanoparticles with animal tissue.Success in the Phase II project will ensure that the cryopreserved tissues pass from the vitrified state to the liquid state without forming crystalline ice (devitrification), and without the high thermal gradients which can lead to mechanical failure (fracture).
