Description
Bio-electronic interfaces are used in a wide array of applications and have shown promise for the treatment of diseases including depression and Parkinsons. The Department of Defense (DoD) is specifically interested in implantable bio-interfaces to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in wounded warriors returning from active duty. Current bio-electronic interfaces, however, suffer from a mismatch in the mechanical properties between the metal-based electrodes and the soft tissue in which they are implanted, resulting in scar tissue formation, chronic inflammation and neuron degeneration, all of which cause failure of the electrode. TDA Research, Inc. (TDA) and our partners at the Univ. of Pittsburgh (UP) are developing soft, flexible, elastic composite electrodes that have mechanical properties similar to biological tissues (100s of kPa stiffness). These materials have previously demonstrated electrical impulse delivery and recoding in live tissue. In this project, TDA and the University of Pittsburgh will adapt its soft-electrode technology for use in neural interfaces, implantable monitors and wearable electronics.
