Description
ABSTRACT: Triton Systems proposes an effort to demonstrate porous insulating materials / heterogeneous composite structures that minimize thermal radiation and are able to withstand repeated exposure to hypersonic-relevant high temperatures (over 1650 K) for periods of over one hour. This program will develop a model for thermal radiation in heterogeneous porous media that can guide the design of materials. Guided by the model, we will prepare and test the targeted materials/structures using a flexible fabrication strategy that will allow us to systematically vary the key parameters and demonstrate technical feasibility.; BENEFIT: A successful effort can provide a key technology for thermal transport mitigation in hypersonics. Therefore, it could have important benefits for several stakeholders including the Air Force, DARPA, NASA and DoD prime contractors.
