Description

In 2002 Tanner Research developed and demonstrated an in-line high voltage Initiation Safety Device (ISD) using exploding foil initiator (EFI) detonator. By 2015 a micro-scale implementation of the 6th Gen. ISD has embedded built-in test (BiT) capability (electronics and energetics) for ongoing use in MIL-STD 1901 applications as rocket motor ignition system, and in similar MIL-STD-1316 warhead initiation system applications.<br>Tanner proposes to G-harden our baseline electronic S&A device (ESAD) for pyrotechnic shock. As such shock induces high amplitude and high frequency displacements, Tanner is proposing to mechanically attenuate a baseline 6th Gen. ESAD by decoupling the electronics from the external package. As the existing design is firmly encapsulated within a rigid, 1-inch diameter metallic through-bulkhead initiator (TBI) structure, there is significant room for additional damping and attenuation components to be judiciously added. We expect to test, evaluate, and assess this architecture empirically to determine survivability using the existing BiT for analysis.
