Description
A small automated foundry to produce metal powders is proposed as a companion to industrial metal 3D printers. The foundry is capable of recycling metal waste such as printed materials, powder, support structures, machining turnings, etc. The foundry operation is automated so that a single operator can support the recycling system. The production rate of the foundry is specified so as to match the typical scrap production rate of industrial 3D printers. A mature version of this system would enable close to zero metal waste generation in 3D printing shops (i.e. 100% material efficiency).
