Description

The lack of sensitive effective and field ready diagnostic tests for neglected tropic diseases NTDs is a critical gap in the global health community s ability to direct control and elimination efforts and track progress in the fight against NTDs We propose to develop an innovative lateral flow assay LFA test for the multiplexed detection of antibodies response to NTD infections in blood The proposed LFA incorporates new architecture for improving the LFA s sensitivity specificity and field compatibility but fits with standard LFA manufacturing and housing process which ensures the low cost production In Phase I proof of concept project we will develop of LFA prototype for simultaneous detection of the antibodies specific to lymphatic filariasis and Schistosomiasis infections in blood samples determine the LFA s performance characteristics of assay sensitivity and specificity and determine the LFA s field compatible characteristics of the stability shelf life and storage requirements The proposed device has the potential to be used for addressing the two issues currently faced by internal NTD programs the need for rapid identifying infected persons in specific areas for facilitating fast mapping which is the basis of program monitoring and evaluation activities the detection of co infections that hamper mass drug administration activities
