Description
As childhood obesity has grown over the past decades, the government has set aggressive targets to reduce it. The main risk factors for childhood obesity are familial and environmental conditions. For dieticians, nutritionists, and supplemental nutrition program staff working with parents, children, and/or families, nutritional counseling that includes motivational interviewing (MI) as a strategy can serve as part of an effective intervention addressing childhood obesity.Dieticians not primarily schooled in client-centered counseling may be able to learn basic MI techniques, but mastery often requires a degree of training, practice, and supervision not practical in most settings. Additionally, research shows that conventional workshop training is insufficient for MI learners to develop proficiency. Despite widespread use of evidence-based MI practice, a standard feasible and preferred method for establishing MI adherence hasn't yet been developed. This project will evaluate an alpha prototype of MIsavvy, an online learning resource for MI skill development that includes opportunities for engaging in interactive MI conversations. We will pursue answers to the following questions: How does exposure to MIsavvy impact retention or improvement of MI competency among dietitians? What are the most important features for dietitians? and, What are the perceived levels of usability and utility among dietitians? We propose to develop and evaluate an alpha version of MIsavvy with approximately 44 registered practicing dietitians using a randomized controlled pre-test/post-test design. We intend to demonstrate a level of change in MI skills serving as proof of concept that an interactive online learning approach is feasible for improving proficiency. The MIsavvy product will help users develop proficiency by addressing current gaps in implementation of the evidence-based practice of motivational interviewing. The use of a reliable method for developing MI proficiency can serve dieticians and nutritionists, as well as health program outreach and education staff, primary health care providers, and pediatric specialists across many different disciplines.
