Description

Intraocular surgery is usually performed under the stereoscopic guidance using a surgical microscope. However, when the optical clarity of the cornea is severely compromised, precluding visualization of the retina and other intraocular anatomy, intraocular surgery becomes very difficult and with increased risk of irreversible error. Minimally-invasive needle-size endoscopic tools are available, but due to the lack of stereoscopic view, the manipulation of the surgical tools within the surgical field becomes very challenging. Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop a novel stereo-endoscopy needle-size probe that can be used for intraocular surgical guidance. In addition to the stereoscopic view, a photocoagulation laser and a 3D cross-sectional imaging capability can be added to enable both photocoagulation therapy and therapy outcome monitoring.
