Description
The goal of this project is to develop a robust, compact, light-weight Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) - based subsystem for fine pointing of high power laser phased arrays. This will facilitate the use of airborne high-energy laser weapons systems for ballistic missile defense. The principal innovation to be introduced is an array of enhanced MEMS mirrors that permit very high resolution pointing with relatively large dynamic range. The MEMS devices are enhanced in the sense that they make use of a novel design which facilitates effective thermal and power management. Integration of the MEMS array into a phased array system can be achieved whether the individual beams are combined coherently or spectrally. Approved for Public Release 14-MDA-7663 (8 January 14)
