Description

To mitigate the Dilemma Zone (DZ) problem, Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) team proposes an innovative Detection, Control and Warning System (DCWS). In this proposed Phase IIB work, IAI team will deploy and evaluate an enhanced version of DCWS that was designed in earlier phases. DCWS provides vehicle-specific dilemma zone protection based on travel time to the intersection as opposed to more conventional systems which protect a fixed area on the pavement. DCWS employs sensors to track individual vehicles in real time and interface with signal controller to implement advanced signal protocols (e.g., as phase hold to extend green beyond max and all red extensions). DCWS also warns the drivers in advance, who are going to be stuck in the DZ using an advanced warning system. In collaboration with Maryland State Highway Administration (MD SHA) candidate intersection for field deployment will be selected. The field deployment will allow for evaluation of the system design and verification of expected benefits. The results of this study will provide guidance on system design, implementation, and its effectiveness in mitigating the dilemma zone problem. As a part of outreach effort a workshop will be conducted at the end of the project
