The Army Defense Health Program has a need for a novel freestanding device to sample and collect a broad spectrum of flying insects (order Diptera) for the purpose of analyzing possible disease vectors. The sampling device is required to be effective against mosquitoes (Anopheles, Aedes, and Culex) and sand flies (Phlebotomus and Lutzomyai) in particular, and with desired applicability to other species such as black flies, biting midges and tsetse flies. The collection device is required to be lightweight, compact, and portable so as to ease the installation and maintenance of the system. In Phase I, McQ performed research to develop a complete conceptual design for a flying insect sampling device (FISDe). In Phase II, McQ will complete the design, and fabricate a complete system (sampling devices and a backend/user interface) suitable for sampling flying insects in both tropical and desert environments.
