Description

The DoD is replacing its legacy tactical satellite communications (SATCOM) system known as the UHF Follow-On (UFO) system with its next generation Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) as UFO reaches the end of its useful life. The MUOS SATCOM system will enable warfighters to communicate directly with their commander and other warfighters from anywhere in the world, and will provide new capabilities and enhanced mobility, access, capacity, and quality of service. The first MUOS satellite was launched in February 2012 and the second in July 2013. The first satellite has been fully verified/accepted by STRATCOM for operational use. One primary intended user is the dismounted Soldier who will require On-The-Move (OTM) connectivity to the MUOS system. There is therefore a need for low-profile and/or conformal antennas capable of providing the required MUOS up and down-link quality of service for Soldier-carried Manpack and Handheld radios. MegaWave previously developed a preliminary design for a Soldier worn conformal rucksack-mounted antenna. MegaWave intends to draw on the results of its previous efforts as well as recent technical advances to improve the performance of the MUOS OTM antenna while maintaining its low profile.
