Description
Current multipoint initiation systems employ multiple Low Energy Exploding Foil Initiators (LEEFI) which require precise timing and higher energy firing systems. RSI has worked with both the Navy and the Air Force on warhead designs intended for multipoint applications in the past. Common problems with this approach include high cost, large space requirements and high energy requirements. Simultaneity of the firing pulses can also be difficult to achieve. From an Insensitive Munitions (IM) standpoint each of the initiator points employs secondary explosives which have been shown to fail IM testing under some circumstances. For this Phase II effort RSI is proposing the further engineering development and qualification of a Digital Detonator system useable for multipoint applications, plane wave generators and other areas at a significantly lower cost. The Digital Detonator also offers a lower profile and significantly decreased energy requirements, which would be capable of meeting the IM requirement goals the Navy has set.
