Description
Airborne optical benches must provide high levels of stability to ensure the mission success of sensitive optical equipment. Optical structures used in high altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms must remain especially robust due to the significant environmental changes between ground level and high altitudes. The goal of this program is to design a lightweight optical bench capable of remaining stable under temperature and moisture changes, while isolating the precision optical array from vibrations such as engine noise and air turbulence. An optical bench that incorporates vibration attenuating properties within the structure itself affords airborne systems a number of advantages including a reduced need for additional vibration damping mounts, decreased weight, and reduced cost. During this project, San Diego Composites and Boston University will design, fabricate, and test a composite optical bench with vibration damping properties, that is insensitive to temperature and moisture changes, and is relatively light weight. SDC plans to meet the goals of this project by utilizing our extensive design and analysis knowledge, advanced composite manufacturing techniques, and highly detailed testing experience.
