Description

The Mobile Fuel Cell Generator (MFCG) addresses needs to increase the reliability of electricity delivery, using equitable, inclusive, sustainable solutions. To address this problem, RockeTruck is developing a portable generator that can be easily transported to deliver clean electric power when grid power is not available. This can include temporary needs, such as utility-mandated “Public Service Power Shutoff” events, and longer-term needs, such as delivery of power to remote, off-grid communities. The problem is being addressed by using advanced hydrogen fuel cell, energy storage, and power electronics technologies to deliver clean power with a Mobile Fuel Cell Generator (“MFCG”) that maximizes portability and minimizes cost. RockeTruck and subcontractor California State University, Los Angeles (“Cal State LA”) attracted two new partners – American Honda Motors to supply fuel cells, and AVL Mobility Technologies to help develop software and controls. The expanded RockeTruck team completed numerous design studies, built a complex fuel cell bench test apparatus, and successfully generated fuel cell power using this testbed. In addition to designing a large “MFCG Ultra” system with co-funding from the California Energy Commission, RockeTruck developed an innovative “MFCG Mini” concept that uses much smaller battery and hydrogen fuel systems, and that can be transported in the bed of a pickup truck. Operated independently, the MFCG Mini will deliver power for short (8-24 hour) intervals and the MFCG Ultra will operate for longer durations (48 hours or more). The pickup truck carrying the MFCG Mini can also tow the trailer-mounted MFCG Ultra, so the two generator models can also be used in combination for high-power applications. During Phase II, RockeTruck will investigate additional innovations to reduce generator size and weight, such as multiport converters and advanced fuel cell thermal management, and optimize MFCG designs to use Honda’s compact new “Next Generation” fuel cell. Prototypes of the MFCG Mini and Ultra will be built and validated through laboratory and field demonstrations. The Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility at Cal State LA will be modified to utilize the MFCG as a backup power source, and Phase II will culminate with a demonstration of the MFCG at this facility. Commercial potential will be maximized by offering the MFCG Mini as the most affordable, transportable solution for applications such as powering construction sites or outdoor entertainment venues, and the MFCG Ultra as a uniquely capable solution for longer duration needs, such as riding out grid power outages caused by lengthy storms or wildfires.
