Description
The proposed R&D project is to develop a lightweight integrated turbogenerator in a compact package intended for embedded integration into a Vertical Take-off and Landing Unmanned Aerial System (VTOL UAS). The turbogenerator will support short duration, high-power flight conditions, such as those encountered during takeoff and landing. The project will take an existing, innovative compact turbogenerator developed by Scaled Power Inc for stationary ground power applications, and increase the power-to-weight ratio through a combination of reducing the weight of the gas-turbine, increasing the power output, and integrating a lightweight generator. The weight reduction will also include specific modifications required to prevent corrosion in a salty marine environment. The overall installed weight of the turbogenerator will be further reduced by eliminating the lubrication and cooling ancillary systems, through the use of air bearings. This is made possible by the rotordynamic simplicity of the unique turbomachinery architecture developed by Scaled Power.
