Description
Multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization (MDAO) is a critical enabling technology for the design of complex systems such as naval aircraft. Using high-performance computing and modern analysis codes, many aspects of naval aircraft, and other, systems can be accurately modeled. However, the generation of the meshes analysis codes need as input is overly time consuming, while it takes substantial expertise to control the meshes to ensure solution accuracy and to effectively transfer solutions in coupled simulations. This project will leverage Simmetrix’ capabilities for the generation and adaptive control of meshes to meet the needs of MDAO processes, with particular consideration of coupled aero-structural-thermal problems. Initial project efforts will develop and demonstrate a specific set of coupled simulation capabilities using a combination of current, and mildly extended, geometric modeling, mesh generation, mesh adaptation and solution transfer capabilities. Using knowledge gained from those demonstrations, efforts will focus on extending the geometric modeling, mesh generation, mesh adaptation, solution transfer and global/local modeling capabilities to effectively satisfy a broader set of MDAO analysis coupling needs, including automated global/local model control methods, conservative solution transfer methods and adaptive mesh control for coupled analyses.
