Imperium in collaboration with its partner Bluefin Robotics is pleased to present this proposal for an underwater imaging device to inspect the internal components of underwater mines. The device is based on Imperium"s proven ultrasound technology and Bluefin"s Hovering Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (HAUV). Imperium"s Acoustocam is an ultrasound video camera based on a patented 2D ultrasound array with 120 x 120 columns of individual piezoelectric elements. The proposed device generates images which are striking for its clarity and simplicity. The proposed device has clarity of imagery and ease of use not associated with other ultrasound imaging systems. Bluefin"s HAUV has the capability of hovering which is essential to the neutralization of underwater mines. Should this project move to a Phase II, the sensor developed and demonstrated under the Phase I effort will be integrated into Bluefin"s HAUV. The resulting system will demonstrate the capability of neutralizing a Limpet mine on a ship"s hull. The sensor will also have the capability of functioning as a diver-held device. The PI of this project, Dr. Marvin Lasser, is the former Chief Scientist of the Army and Director of Army Research for 17 years with over 45 years of experience in pioneering camera technology.
