Description
As part of the STTR topic MDA22-T005, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is seeking to improve its modeling capabilities of hypersonic jet interactions especially for reaction control thrusters used for maneuvering at high-altitude. Current modeling approaches either lack the required fidelity or require large levels of computational resources making them not suited for trade studies, and ultimately delaying the time and increasing the cost to field new hypersonic weapon systems. To help solve this challenge, Spectral Energies (SE) and its academic partners at the University of Florida (UF) propose to use and modify HyBurn, an existing and well-validated tool that can efficiently simulate a wide variety of chemistry and hypersonic flows using advanced numerical methods. During Phase I, the team will demonstrate the capabilities of HyBurn with respect to hypersonic jet interaction and develop a plan to improve HyBurn and validate the software. During Phase II, the team will incorporate the improvements into HyBurn, collect wind tunnel validation data, and work towards developing HyBurn into a user-friendly software tool that can be used for designing future hypersonic weapon systems.
