Robotic systems have enabled U.S. Forces to respond and adapt to a rapidly changing battlespace in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the present conflict, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) have been used by the enemy to attack Allied soldiers, government leaders, local police, and civilians. As IED tactics have developed, America has responded through new and innovative tools to protect our soldiers. One of the most successful and adaptable solutions are the Man Transportable Robotic Systems (MTRSs) that are now deployed in theater. These systems allow soldiers to move objects and examine suspicious areas while remaining at a safe distance away. New attachments and tools that affix to these robots have enabled continuing success by adapting to enemy tactics. The Tangential Rotary Impact Tool (TRT) that is currently under development represents one such tool and is focused on using an MTRS to remove concrete and hard packed soil surrounding an IED.
