Description
To increase the energy capacity, reduce the weight, improve the cyclic lifetime, and shorten the recharging time for batteries for use in future handheld radio applications, we need advanced energy storage technologies that perform better than current Li-ion batteries. TDA proposes to develop batteries based on Lithium-ion/Sulfur (Li-S) battery chemistry. To increase the energy density, rate capabilities, and lifetime of the batteries, we will use TDA’s proprietary carbon/sulfur (C/S) composite for the cathode material. Our goal is to develop full cells based on Li-S chemistry to provide, at a minimum, specific energy of 500 Wh/Kg capable of recharge at a rate of up to 3C while maintaining the reliability and safety standards of today's Li-Ion batteries. Phase I work plan will be to make, test, and evaluate Li-S coin cells. We will develop facile processes that are scalable and inexpensive. We will also conduct a feasibility study to review all possible combinations of cathode and anode materials that can reach the military performance parameters. A final report, including Phase II plans, will be delivered at the end of the project. Prototype cylindrical 18650 cells and battery packs will be designed and built during Phase II.
