Description

The proposed fiber optic based array shape measurement system functions by measuring the strains of the array hose through the use of embedded fiber optic sensors. The fiber optic sensors respond to deflections (shape changes) of the array hose and these readings are processed by proprietary software to determine the shape of the acoustic array. The proposed Phase II effort will focus on the integration of the optical fiber sensors into the array hose structure for the shape estimation system. The research team will demonstrate the reliability, functionality, and system performance through a series of tests on short array hose sections during the base effort and prototype modules during the Option I effort. These tests will include tension tests, bend tests, and optical continuity tests to demonstrate the ruggedness of the embedded optical fiber sensors. Additionally, strain transfer tests will be conducted to demonstrate the ability of the embedded optical fiber sensors to effectively measure the response of the hose structure as the shape is deformed. In the Option II effort the prototype module will be tested at a facility capable of handling the lengths of the TB-29 modules to demonstrate the ability of the system to measure shape.
