Description

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) is a laminated solar window technology that enables window-integrated sunlight harvesting for electricity generation, in which an portion of light absorbed by the window “tint” is shifted to a specific color by quantum dots (QDs) and directed towards small solar cells attached at the edges of the LSC. Inherently, laminated glass LSC solar windows combine the safety benefits of laminated glass with solar energy generation in a single autonomous device. UbiQD is proposing a Defense feasibility study through estimations and interview with DAF stakeholders to assess base energy resilience impact and security threat mitigation via an LSC solar window and automated shade product designed to be installed in buildings on bases housing Air Force personnel. The Phase 1 proposal will isolate the solar window product concept of most interest to AFCEC, AFSFC, and exemplary bases (JB Andrews, Edwards) that achieves reduced energy consumption and occupant security through automated shade articulation plus ballistic penetration resistance through lamination engineering.
