Description

The expected result of this Phase II effort is the completed development of one or more commercial ready wireless sensing systems. Market validation will be accomplished and Element One will begin introducing its first wireless network hydrogen leak detection products to the markets. This project will be conducted to accomplish the following specific objectives: 1. Complete the characterization of our most promising thin-film sensors and optimize their speed of response, durability, and manufacturing techniques for selected applications. 2. Complete the design of wireless network components and integration with thin-filmsensors to achieve a first-generation wireless hydrogen leak detection system. 3. Demonstrate technical and economic viability of wireless sensing systems through multiple demonstrations and field tests in at least two of the major markets for natural gas infrastructure. 4. Identify new wireless sensor configurations with application to natural gas infrastructure and select those with promise for additional products.This work will be completed Element One with two supporting organizations as subcontractors. Esensors, Inc. of Amherst, NY who will be responsible for the wireless design and optimization with Element One’s sensors, and personnel from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Hydrogen Safety R&D program to test the sensor wireless systems in the presence of hydrogen-natural gas mixtures. This SBIR Phase II project will build on previous research and the successful completion of the SBIR Phase I project to answer any remaining questions regarding the best application-specific sensor designs, wireless communications, and software control strategies. The desired result is the completed development of one or more wireless sensing systems ready for product development, market testing and commercial introduction. Element One has previously developed and commercialized DetecTape®, a self-fusing silicone tape that changes color to visually indicate hydrogen leaks, and the knowledge and insights gained from this experience and our successful Phase I project will be valuable to this Phase II effort.
