Pear and the University of Pittsburgh Neuromuscular Research Laboratory/Warrior Human Performance Research Center’s STTR effort will provide research and development concerning the fusing of sensor data from readily available sensors (COTS sensors) to create new datasets that will give increased ability to detect changes in a warfighters physiology that may indicate a negative physiological deviation (eg: degradation in fitness, increase in fatigue) that may provide an early warning of a pending lower limb MSK injury.. According to a US military report (2019), 3 out of 10 US military active service members are affected by knee-, ankle-, and foot-related injuries and the implications of such MSK injuries in terms of attrition rates, morbidity and training costs for military population are overwhelming. Solving this problem will allow commanders and care teams to quantitatively assess ‘readiness’ and determine the current state of the warfighters ‘system health’, in real-time, with respect to their individual propensity for future injury/illness. This will improve an Airmen's ability to achieve the mission, prevent illness/injury, and increase readiness for combat.
