Description

M109 Paladin howitzers play an important tactical role in support of Army ground forces. Launching 155mm projectiles has remained a labor-intensive process despite advanced technology now permeating both the vehicle and the munitions, as illustrated by systems such as PGK-equipped (Precision Guided Kit) weapons. Manual handling and loading of the projectiles restricts the achievable rate of fire, forcing the crew to loiter in the battle space and placing the mission at risk. Moreover, the crew is at risk for various injuries when handling heavy projectiles. ADA Technologies proposes to develop a modular autoloader composed of two largely independent, simple, light and adaptable modules to address the need for a significantly increased rate of fire, reducing exposure to enemy counter measures, and addressing long-term ergonomic issues for the crew. When combined, the two modules will enable a fire rate of up to 12 projectiles per minute and remove one crew member. ADA Technologies will develop the system in partnership with Northrop Grumman, supplier of the PGK, and Moog, supplier of the 155mm projectile autoloader for the German PzH 2000. This proposal addresses the development of the first module, the “Projectile Preparation” module. The “Munition Loading” module is proposed separately.
