Description
The state of art detection systems deployed at spallation sources include 3He position-sensitive tubes and scintillator modules. There are a number of diffractometers that operate with hundred of 3He-filled position-sensitive tubes with a position resolution of no better than 8mm for large area detectors. However, the concern over the availability and cost of 3He detectors, has resulted in increasing interest in scintillator-based cameras. They all have a position resolution of ~1.0 mm with limited neutron detection efficiency. Novel detector technologies having resolutions around hundreds of microns with high count rates and neutron detection efficiencies are currently being sought. Under this SBIR program, we will develop ultrafast high spatial resolution neutron detectors based on a novel detection technology. The major tasks of phase I would be: (a) Demonstration of a neutron detector with high spatial-resolution and neutron detection efficiency, and (b) Optimization of the detector for large area applications. This novel neutron detector that will be developed under this program will have multifaceted commercial applications in the fields of neutron radiography. In addition to physics experiments and industrial imaging, these detectors will have immense potential for homeland security applications.
