Description
The Transportable Blood Storage (TBS) system is designed to transport fresh whole blood and vaccines farther and more reliably than currently available. A prototype will demonstrate the feasibility of a stackable, portable, active refrigeration unit capable of holding up to 36 units of blood without the need for any additional appliances or ice packs. Concept evaluations will be completed with 720th Special Operations Surgical Team (SOST) members and other blood logistics industry members. Phase I will identify the feasibility of this prototype to meet FDA and AABB blood bank quality regulation, where passive devices in use today use transport exceptions. Phase I will also determine the feasibility of using a hybrid active and passive cooling system in order to increase storage duration and reduce weight.
