Description

The overarching objective of this Phase I program is the identify USAF SmallSat platforms that can benefit from a versatile, high performance energy storage solution in the form of modular components that can be interchanged depending on the requirements of a particular mission. By gaining a thorough understanding of the requirements of key USAF platforms, ADA can determine which energy storage product(s) best fits each application. The proposed innovation of this development effort is to utilize 4+ advanced space electrochemistries (developed at ADA) to create a standardized cell design and modular battery enclosure that can be used across multiple USAF space platforms. The modular architecture is designed to reduce NRE and increase mission flexibility. It will allow the USAF to qualify a rigid, space hardened cell enclosure once, but still utilize all four electrochemistries. Using combinations of the different electrochemistries provides the ability to create hybrid systems that optimize both the power and energy output of the energy storage system. ADA will design and manufacture advanced cells and hybrid ES systems in-house using existing Agile Manufacturing Platform. ADA will sell ES products directly to Federal customers (e.g. NASA) as well as DoD space primes/integrators (Lockheed, Boeing, Northrop, Sierra Nevada, Ball).
