Description
Under this proposed Phase I SBIR effort, ThermAvant Technologies (ThermAvant) shall design, model, prototype and analyze the thermal performance of landscaped heat sinks with integral oscillating heat pipes (OHP) and phase change material (PCM) reservoirs (collectively, OHP/PCM). Prototype OPH/PCM heat sinks shall demonstrate their unique potential to acquire, rapidly spread and isothermally store heat produced of high-power density opto-electronic and radio frequency (RF) payloads aboard missile systems. The goal of the OHP/PCM heat sinks is to extend the operating windows of missile payloads without size, weight and power (SWaP) penalties imposed by status quo heat sinks. ThermAvant will work with both Army subject matter experts as well as prime defense contractor(s) to ensure OHP/PCM heat sinks are compatible with the demanding operating and storage environments of their missile applications. Lastly, ThermAvant will investigate multiple, advanced manufacturing techniques to optimize lead time, cost and complexity of OHP/PCM heat sinks for future, higher-volume supply to military and commercial customers.
