Description

As airborne threats become increasingly widespread, low-cost High Energy Laser (HEL) systems including Fast Steering Mirrors (FSMs) can effectively help protect innumerable lives and resources. Applied Technology Associates (ATA) proposes the Low Cost Fast Steering Mirror (LCFSM) program to develop a high bandwidth FSM capable of operating at full performance for the airborne HEL application, while maintaining a target cost of $15K and maximum cost of $30K. In order to meet this unique set of requirements, ATA will use a mechanism that accommodates low cost (pre-coated) off-the-shelf solid mirror substrates, low cost COTS or elastomeric flexures, simple electromagnetic actuators, and optical angle sensing. ATA has structured the Phase I tasks to meet the program objectives, and will perform trade studies for key FSM components and develop a FSM design. A single optimal actuation and flexure will be identified and selected based on risk reduction activities and trade studies. ATA will create a detailed model for the final selections; this model will support critical design and building a prototype FSM in Phase II. The primary target market for the LCFSM is tactical aviation, with a secondary target of counter-unmanned systems (CxS).
