Description

Microbial contamination of aviation fuel storage vessels can degrade fuel and create flight safety risks. Newer fuel mixtures that include more renewable fuels are more susceptible to biodegradation than petroleum based fuels. Early detection of microbial contamination will prevent expensive tank remediation efforts and loss of fuel. A robust and simple to use microbial sensor is needed to ensure the quality of fuel in storage tanks, and transport systems. In this Phase I SBIR we will investigate the feasibility of using an acoustics-based sensor to measure the extent of microbial contamination in fuel tanks and refueling trucks. The changes in the acoustic properties (reflection, transmission) at different frequencies will be correlated with the presence and extent of microbial contamination in fuel mixtures. Following successful feasibility demonstration, a sensor for monitoring fuel storage vessels will be developed.
