Description

Although patient simulators have demonstrated improved learning outcomes in medical training, there are significant limitations in cost, ease of use, portability and realism. These issues significantly hinders their educational value to the Air Force. To address these significant limitations of the current medical patient simulators, the PI has developed PerSim®, a provisionally patented patient simulator system using augmented reality (AR) and currently a product offered by the PI's company. The PI proposes to conduct additional research and development to enable PerSim® to support Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) training scenarios. Commercial Potential: Based on interviews with individuals in Air Force medical organizations, civilian Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies and civilian medical training organizations, critical care training scenarios would be of significant value. Since being released in 4th quarter 2017, there are 9 civilian sites that have purchased PerSim®, resulting in total sales of approximately $237K. Each site is using the system for EMS training, effectively training over 100 trainees per year. Moreover, the PI has a joint marketing agreement with Microsoft and agreements with national sales distributors, which boost the company’s marketing efforts and commercialization potential of the proposed CCATT training simulation capabilities.
