Description

The objective of this effort is to demonstrate the feasibility of a 40 kW UPS with at least 100ms of holdup time, integrated into a standard 19 inch rack mount enclosure with 4U (7 inch) height, and designed to meet electrical and mechanical/shock specifications required for naval shipboard application. Traditional UPS applications are typically not optimized for weight and volume, and utilize bulky lead-acid batteries that provide significantly more energy storage than is needed for naval bus-transfer holdup applications. The proposed converter utilizes wide-bandgap semiconductors and high power density energy storage to enable a significant reduction in weight and volume compared to existing shipboard UPS solutions. The proposed UPS will provide continuous power to critical loads during bus transfers and will reduce load inrush on the generation system following a bus-transfer event.
