Description
The proposed Phase I effort aims to develop a small satellite energy storage solution that enables high power density Li-ion cells to be emplaced in compact payload or bus modules without the thermal management risks imposed by status quo battery packaging technologies. The key feature proposed herein is a “passive and thermally-intelligent” but mechanically sound package structure built with internal, variable conductance dielectric oscillating heat pipes. Successful completion of Phase I tasks will enable future small spacecraft to operate large format Li-ion cells at highly variable discharge rates and fly in equally variable thermal environments without the cells operating outside their safe temperature range -- and do so without adding size, weight or power penalties.
