Description
The movement to more-electric architectures during the past decade in military and commercial airborne systems continues to increase the complexity of designing and specifying the electrical power system in such architectures. In particular, electrical starter/generators (ES/G) on airborne systems have become much more complex in terms of design due to growth in electrical power and energy requirements. They pose new integration challenges due to their significantly larger impact on the thermal and mechanical system compared to previous solutions. An end to these challenges is not in sight, as airborne systems, both civilian and military, will demand more electrical power in the future to satisfy new and advanced loads such as electric flight actuation, high-power RADAR and sensors, and directed energy weapons. On top of the increased power demand, additional challenges are imposed by the increasingly harsh environmental conditions in which these units must operate, with increased ambient temperatures being one of the most significant challenges designers face today. PC Krause and Associates (PCKAs) advanced generator technology, which has been developed and demonstrated to TRL 5 under the previous Phase I and Phase II efforts, addresses several of the existing limitations currently facing customers requiring high-performance generators through the elimination of
